Sarah Burke - Always

by Ken Ach
Jan 20, 2012 at 15:22

bigquotesSarah Burke died on Jan 19, 2012. If you can't be in the mountains today to celebrate life, do it in your mind. The cool thing about going for a shred in your mind is you can always ride with Sarah, and best of all - your goggles always have the right color lens. What color lens do you use in heaven anyway? Your feet/hands are always warm, you always get 'firsts' on your line, you always stick the landing, the lift lines are always short, the heli's and snowcats always have bottomless gas tanks, the powder is always fresh, the jokes are always funny, the hikes are always fast, your body is always in shape, the photographer always nails the shot, the filmer always has the perfect angle, the sponsors checks are always big, the pipe is always perfect, the lifties always smile and always know your name, you always have the perfect music playing, you always have the perfect set up, you can always ride anywhere and everywhere, the chilli in the lodge is always good, younger shreds don't always kick your ass, your wax is always right, your edges are always sharp, the trees are always perfectly spaced, the pow is always deep and the jumps are always perfect, your friends are always there, it never gets dark, and life never ends. - Always, Ken Achenbach

An Excerpt from Winter: Sarah Burke and Rory Bushfield

The loss of women's superpipe pioneer and 4-time X Games gold medallist Sarah Burke, 29, was a sad reminder of mortality to all that participate in action sports. She clearly touched the lives of many and was integral in getting her event into the 2014 Olympics. This is a selection from The Ski Channel's second feature film, 'Winter.' Rory Bushfield and Sarah Burke are two of action sports most prominent freeskiers. The newly-wed couple invite us into their lives and detail what its like to be at the forefront of action sports. You can help Sarah's family pay for medical bills here.

R.I.P. . She was, and is, an inspiration to many. Even to people who didn't even know what freeskiing is. A great skier and person has fallen. The sport is pushing too hard almost. Pushing to the point of death. But skiers aren't scared of that risk. which is a terrible thing at times. She will be missed and will not be forgotten. Rest in piece Sarah Burke.

Oh my god you have to be kidding me. What the hell happened. I know what it like skiing on the edge in the backcountry, one wrong move and it over. This weekend I made my return to skiing after sufferring massive leg trauma. Didn't even realize the whole time we were out there in the trails honoring a legend of the mountains that had passed away.

She will be missed and feel heartbroken for Rory. Rory know the world of action sports and fans all over support you as well in this hard time. I'm not even a skier, but admire her story and drive.

Canada Freestyle didn't have her fully insured which is even more mind blowing. She was only insured for sanctioned events. Unbelievable.

the bad thing is, that there even is the posibility to have wrong insurance. it should be standardised and no one should have to pay for such medical bills exept insurance companys. that whole thing is just so sad...all the best to her family!
